If there are weeks when you definitely plan to attend the in-person Shabbat morning services, please email me (Amy) at ritual@templebnaibrith.org to let us know! There is no need to decide ahead of time, but we will be working to ensure we have sufficient attendance for our summer services when many people will be traveling, and it is greatly appreciated if you are able to let us know your plans in advance.
Saturday Evening Holiday Services
Aug 2, 9:00 PM: Erev Tisha B'av services. This will be in-person only, likely in Nissenbaum Hall. Let me know if you are interested in chanting from the book of Eichah (Lamentations) as we observe the fast day commemorating the destruction of the ancient Temples in Jerusalem.
Services & Event Details
Friday Nights
Kabbalat Shabbat and Potluck/Dinner: Full Friday night liturgy (Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv), led by Rabbi Eliana. Summer start time is 6:30 PM, with a meal following services around 7:30. This meal will be a potluck on July 11th; it may be a catered dinner on August 15th (more information to come). Weather permitting, this will be held in the tent; if there is heavy rain, we will use Nissenbaum Hall.
Musical Kabbalat Shabbat and Potluck: Lay-led Kabbalat Shabbat gathering during which some of the prayers will incorporate musical instruments (no Ma'ariv/evening service). Services start at 6:15 PM. More information is available on our website. Temperature permitting, this will be held in Nissenbaum Hall; if it is too hot, we will use the tent.
Zoom-Only Kabbalat Shabbat: This will be lay-led on July 25th and led by Rabbi Eliana on August 22nd. It includes the full Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv liturgy.
Spring Hill Minyan is an informal group of people in and near Spring Hill in Somerville. It meets monthly in people's homes for a song-filled Kabbalat Shabbat service (no Ma'ariv service) and potluck dinner. Email ritual@templebnaibrith.org to be added to the email list for information about upcoming gatherings. Summer start time is 6:30 PM.
Shabbat Morning Services
Shabbat morning services will begin at 9:30 AM, whether in person or on Zoom only.
In-person Shabbat morning services in July and August will be held in the tent behind TBB unless there is heavy rain, in which case they will be held in the Blumsack Chapel. The chapel and restrooms, including the accessible restroom, are on the bottom/ground level and accessible via our stairs-free back entrance.
These services will be possible to view from home but will not be set up for hybrid participation: we will not have a sound system that allows remote participants to be heard by the people in the tent. If you plan to attend services remotely on those dates but would like us to include the name of a loved one in our Misheberach L'cholim (prayer for the sick) or would like a memorial prayer during the Torah service in honor of a loved one's yahrtzeit, please email ritual@templebnaibrith.org by 10:00 AM the day before. It will not be possible to have a remote aliyah on those days, but this does not preclude us from including a memorial prayer as long as we have the person's name in advance.
Accessibility & Inclusion
There are many competing needs impacting our approach to accessibility and inclusion at this time. The building temperature can be quite hot over the summer, the elevator is currently out of service, some of us avoid indoor services for health reasons, and some of us do not use computers on Shabbat. We are striving to offer a range of options to meet different people's accessibility and Shabbat observance needs. For some of our upcoming services, it is difficult to share a final location in advance without knowing the weather forecast and the elevator repair timeline; stay tuned.
Physical Accessibility Details
For in-person events at TBB:
- The Blumsack Chapel and our restrooms, including one accessible restroom, are on the bottom/ground level and accessible via our stairs-free back entrance.
- Our shul tent is in our backyard at the bottom of the driveway opposite the back entrance.
- Nissenbaum Hall is on the main/middle level. It is six steps up from street level via our front entrance and one full flight up from the restrooms.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Hope to see you soon,
Amy
