Further Introduction to Jewish Mysticism

We will begin with an examination of the central concepts and practices of the classical esoteric Kabbalah of late thirteenth century Spain. We will then look at the development of a radicalized and popularized Kabbalah in sixteenth century Tz’fat (Safed), in the land of Israel. Finally, we will consider Chassidism, the eighteenth century Eastern European revival movement, with its further popularization, psychologization, and mystical deepening of Kabbalistic concepts and practices.

The Exodus "For Real"

Join us for a fresh look at one of Judaism's founding narratives — the Exodus. How can the study of materials from ancient Egypt add to our discussion of the Exodus narrative? How does the Biblical narrative fit into the wider cultural context of the ancient Near East.

Dr. Eric Cohen, who received his PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations specializing in Egyptology from Yale University, will be our guide on this exciting journey. Eric who is currently a rabbinical student at Hebrew College brings the era of the Exodus to life using ancient Egyptian inscriptions, texts, art and archaeological evidence as tools.

Thursday, November 13, 7:30-9:00pm. Recommended donation $8.

Jews in the Final Frontier

From Vulcans to Batman, from robots to wizards, Jewish writers and actors have shaped every level of American fantasy and science fiction.  Born into immigrant families, many Jews often had to hide their 'secret identity' behind bland public masks — a social reality that led to the birth of such famous superheroes as Superman, Spiderman and scores of others.

And that's only the beginning of the story... Join us as we delve into the strange new worlds of F&SF texts and films as we explore their Jewish roots and continued influences in the present day!

Guest lecturer Joshua Breindel, a fifth year rabbinical student at Hebrew College, holds an MA in Jewish folklore. He is a talented storyteller and has been teaching Judaism and spirituality all around New England. This year he is acting as the spiritual leader of the Greater Jewish Community of Stowe, VT.

Thursday, December 11, 7:30-9:00pm. Recommended donation $8.
